Margo Maeckelberghe
Margo Maeckelberghe (1932-2014)
Margo Maeckelberghe is a Cornish artist whose work is deeply rooted in a lifelong connection to place, memory, and the natural world. Living and working in Cornwall, her practice is shaped by the shifting light, rugged coastline, and quiet rhythms of the landscape, which inform both her subject matter and her sensitive approach to making.
Working primarily with paint, Margo explores atmosphere and emotion rather than literal representation. Her work often sits at the edge of abstraction, allowing colour, texture, and gesture to evoke a sense of place rather than describe it. Layers are built slowly and intuitively, creating surfaces that suggest weathered land, tidal movement, and the passage of time.
Margo’s process is reflective and exploratory. She is interested in how a landscape can be felt as much as seen, and how personal experience, memory, and observation can be distilled into visual form. This results in work that feels both grounded and contemplative, inviting the viewer to pause and engage quietly.
Her paintings have been shown in galleries across Cornwall and are held in private collections. Through her work, Margo Maeckelberghe continues to develop a subtle, considered practice that reflects a deep respect for the Cornish environment and its enduring influence.
