Hester Dennett
Hester Dennett grew up in Hackney, East London. She studied Fine Art Painting at Central St Martins College of Art and Design. As a postgraduate, she studied production design at the National film and television school and went to work as a concept designer for the animation industry.
With a passion for surfing and the outdoors, Hester moved to Cornwall in 2005 and now lives and works in Newlyn.
‘My collection of land and seascapes translate the raw elemental nature of Cornwall’s Penwith peninsula. Using multiple applications of ink on paper to build texture and tone, I endeavour to articulate a distilled experience of Cornwall’s most westerly fringe;
Thunderous rain and fog-swaddled hillocks a familiar motif. Paintings begin, stop, are forgotten, are resurrected and consolidated and evolve out of a concentrated but playful engagement with my my materials; chance shapes and surface incidents become the focal point to many of my works and each feels weather and worn, much like the land they recall.’
